Call for Student Volunteers

The ISWC 2013 Organizing Committee invites applications from enthusiastic students that are interested in participating in ISWC 2013 as student volunteers (SVs). Applications must be submitted using the online application form by June 10, 2013. Information about roles, benefits and duties of SVs as well as about the application process is provided below. Should you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact us: studentvolunteers2013@ubicomp.org.

What are student volunteers?

A student volunteer is a student interested in participating in ISWC 2013 and eager to learn how the organization of such an event works “behind the scenes”. SVs support the conference Chairs, speakers, and attendees during the whole duration of the conference and its adjunct events (e.g., workshops). For instance, SVs might help running the conference registration desk or setting up the conference’s poster and demo sessions. As an SV, you will have the opportunity to interact with the conference organizers, speakers, and attendees from both industry and academia, thereby getting to know people from all over the world and creating relationships that will last for your entire career!

What are the duties of a student volunteer?

As a student volunteer, you will be required to support the organizers of ISWC 2013. Typical duties of an SV include: help welcoming and registering conference participants; support in setting up the conference’s poster and demo sessions; provide conference attendees with information at the conference venue; help speakers set up their presentation, etc. SVs will be required to be in Zurich and available to work for the whole duration of the conference and its workshops, starting from the early afternoon of Saturday, September 7 until the evening of Thursday, September 12, 2013. Travel plans and other relevant constraints will be considered for the preparation of the final work plan of all SVs.

SVs will be required to work for a few hours every day during the conference and its workshops. Thereby, we will make sure that each student will be able to follow part of the conference program. We expect SVs to work with great rigor and eagerness and to show up in time according to the work plan.

What are the benefits for a student volunteer?

Now that you have learned about the duties of a student volunteer, it is time to learn about the great advantages this role entails! As an SV, you will be granted free registration for both UbiComp 2013 and ISWC 2013. You will thus be able to attend the conference presentations, workshops, and poster and demo sessions as well as have free access to all conference meals. Furthermore, you will be our guest at the conference dinner and be invited to the SV party (planned for the evening of Thursday, September 12, 2013). You will also receive the exclusive conference T-shirt, which will be available for organizers and SVs only!

Being an SV at ISWC 2013 will thus give you a high visibility and a great chance to meet both senior and junior members from both industry and academia of the UbiComp and ISWC research communities. This will allow you to make new friends and contacts from all over the world that will last for your entire career! Names of SVs will also be published on the conference web site. Last but not least, student volunteers will also be given priority in the assignment of UbiComp 2013 student travel grants!

Who is eligible for an SV position and how to apply?

To be eligible for serving as an SV, you must have had student status (undergraduate, graduate, or PhD) for at least one semester during the academic year before ISWC 2013 (i.e., students enrolling for the first time for the winter term 2013 are not eligible). Please provide us with your university details when applying. Students who have an accepted paper, poster, demo, video, or other contribution at UbiComp 2013 or ISWC are also welcome to apply.

If you would like to apply for an SV position at UbiComp 2013 or ISWC 2013, please fill in the application form available at http://www.ubicomp.org/ubicomp2013/calls/svform.php by June 10, 2013. We will notify you whether your application has been accepted by June 17, 2013, the latest.
